Saturday at 700 pm central on ESPN - The Iron Bowl features the University of Alabama coming to Auburn University for the rivalry that ESPN calls the greatest rivalry in college football. Sports Illustrated ranks only the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry higher in all of sports.
This is a rivalry that dates back to 1893. Alabama leads the series 38-32, but Auburn has won the last five. It is impossible to express what passions that this game ignites. In the state of Alabama you have to declare your allegiance early, preferably by the first grade, or you can be banished from the state. Coaching careers have been broken by not winning this one game! Following the retirement of Bear Bryant, Ray Perkins was run out of Tuscaloosa for losing to Auburn - at the end of a 10-1 season.
Mike Shula, the coach for the past five years, never won an Iron Bowl, losing five in a row and three of them at home. He was unceremoniously fired for that achievement. Alabama is 0-6 in Tuscaloosa against Auburn, Auburn is 12-2 against Alabama at home. (Long story - The series, until 1989, was played at a "neutral" site)
If you are a college football fan, tune in for the biggest game of the year in the SEC. Obob, congrats to your Buckeyes, but OSU-Michigan pales in comparison to this one...
