Happy 232nd Birthday, Marines

10 November 1775, Tun Tavern, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On that day the Congress of the United States commissioned Samuel Nicholas to raise a Corps of Marines. Nicholas set up his recruiting depot at Tun Tavern, and young men flocked there for the adventure - and the free beer.

The United States Marine Corps was founded and has been the force for freedom around the world for 232 years. As the saying goes, the Marines don't take applications, just commitments. Considering that the the Corps only gets only 12% of the defense budget, does it incredibly well.

It is hard work to claim the title, and even harder work to maintain the proud traditions of those Marines who have gone before us. From Tripoli to Belleu Wood, Okinawa to Hue City, Kuwait City to Al-Nasariyah the Marines ensure that the enemy will be defeated, regardless of the clime or place.

To the left is the video birthday message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps. It is about seven minutes, but well worth the time. You will be captivated and motivated!

For my Marine brothers - Semper Fidelis, Devildogs! I saddled up with an ALICE pack a couple of weekends ago for a scout hike. It wasn't as dry as the LZ road at Camp Lejeune, but I was sweating like it was! I may not know your name, and I can't quite handle a CAX like I used to, but anytime, anyplace. Just let me know.

The joke is that Veteran's Day is on November 11th to give the Marines a day to recover from the celebration.

In all the pageantry of the Corps, the Birthday Ball is cherished and is an incredible day each year. No matter where Marines are, on ship or in Baghdad, there will be a cake ceremony and lots of sea stories.
