The Next Two Years Will Be A Lot Of Fun

ABC News/Washington Post Poll. Dec. 7-11, 2006. N=1,005 adults nationwide. MoE ± 3.

"What would you say is the one most important problem you would like to see Bush and the Congress deal with next year?" (Open-ended question)

Iraq/War in Iraq 44%
Economy 10%
Health care 6%
Immigration 5%
Terrorism/Homeland security 4%
Education 4%
Jobs/Unemployment 3%
Gas prices/Energy prices 3%
Other 18%
Unsure 4%

Compared to the demos actual agenda for the first legislative priorities:

Leading up to the opening session, Democrats this week distributed their latest outline of their "first 100 hours" agenda, which puts ethics and open government reforms at the top of their priority list to accomplish. The agenda also includes adopting the remaining recommendations of the Sept. 11 commission, raising the minimum wage, promoting stem cell research and renewable fuels and reducing Medicare prescription prices and student loan costs.

I also found this funny:

"The first thing, of course, we're going to do as you know is adopt rules which will provide for integrity, civility and fiscal responsibility in the House of Representatives," Hoyer said.

"We're going to restore openness, integrity and honesty in Congress, and we'll hand the keys of the government back to the American people," Slaughter said in a press conference Wednesday.

But they are going to do this in secret and without sharing the details of the plan until it is introduced on the floor for debate.

And, they are big on ethics, supposedly.

Require earmarks disclosures and members to certify that such earmarks do not benefit themselves or their spouses.

Maybe do away with the earmarks altogether? That is the largest source of pork and unethical expenditures in Congress.

But I guess that has to wait for another day. I know, the GOP drooled all over themselves in 1994 when they were able to finally do what the demos had been doing for 40 years, and benefit from earmarks themselves. Equally disgusting.

I just find it funny that they say in the same room that they are restoring integrity to government yet don't preclude themselves from unethical and irresponsible behavior.

I don't know if I can keep laughing this hard for two years.

Making the Iraq War the problem of the Dems is the political equivolent of shaking up a can of beer and handing it to someone you don't like - it's funny, but only to those who don't have to clean up the mess.

Robert said...

Nicho, they wanted the problem didn't they? I am not laughing about it. It is a serious matter for serious people. The demos promised to be serious about a new direction, and now they have none and don't plan on propsing one except for cutting off funds. I simply enjoy pointing out the inconsistencies and irresponsibility.

Anonymous said...

You keep mentioning the "cutting off funds" thing, which is actually Murtha's statement that he will cut any funding that calls for an increase in troop levels. You make it sound like the Dems are going to cut total financial support to the military and that's simply not accurate either in fact or insinuation.

If you want a serious discussion, which you now apparently do despite stating that you didn't know if you could "keep laughing this hard for two years", that's fine. Keep to the facts and stop playing sophistic games.

Robert said...

Nicho, it is serious discussion, and I had an entire post a month or so ago with quotes from dems about doing exactly that - cutting off funding for the war, and thereby forcing the President to bring them home.

Jesse Jackson said today on Neil Cavuto's show that the democratic party had no choice but to stop funding the war.

I will continue to point out the disingenousness of the left, and of their sophomoric attempts at solving real problems.

Allow me my fun, will ya?

"Iraq/War in Iraq 44%"

Oh, right, continue focusing on the one crisis that has politicians and leaders neglecting every other crisis on our soil.

msliberty said...

The agenda is for the FIRST 100 hrs, and is not exhaustive.

Robert said...

What crisis on our soil? Immigration? It isn't on the list either.

I see..Bush can do nothing right in Iraq and we need change. But it is ok with you that the demos now totlly ignore Iraq. I love the consistency.

Laurie said...

Are you kidding me? What crisis on our soil, Robert?

How about:

health care
social security
levee system in New Orleans
minimum wage
rise in violent crime
response to natural/terrorist disaster

Robert said...

Health Care - Health care is a crisis in Somalia and Darfur and a thousand other places on earth. The health care in America is the greatest in the world.

Social Security - That crisis was begun with the creation of SS. We should make it go away. Other than the manner in which Congress has screwed it up, it is no crisis.

New orleans - I don't see it as anything approaching a crisis. I see it as yet another failure by the federal government.

Minimum wage - What is in crisis about this? Minimum wage is an insult to people who accept it. The crisis is the failure of society to expect people to do for themselves.

Violent crime - has never been a federal issue, and there is no federal solution. The "rise" in violent crime isn't such s story. FBI index crimes rose, but actually at a rate that would be expected compared to the increase in population.

Terrorist disaster - In case you haven't noticed, we havent had either a terrorist or natural disaster to respond to lately. Besides, there is no terrorist theat. We should send them flowers and puppies to appease them.

"Health care is a crisis in Somalia and Darfur and a thousand other places on earth. The health care in America is the greatest in the world."

The best of bad isn't good, Robert. Having to compare our health care system to that of third world countries just to make ourselves feel better is both pathetic and an insult to the American people. 16% (or about 40 million) of Americans can't afford health insurance, which means they are relegated to second- or third-rate care (if any at all), often at the cost of their welfare or lives. Before you begin singing the praises of the charity system, please keep in mind that states are cutting off funding across the board for charity hospitals, which often end up poorer than the very people for whom they attempt to provide care.

The elderly are, in increasing numbers, unable to afford the medications that keep them either well or alive. The Bush Medicare Drug plan was too complicated to be of any benefit to these people, and we hear stories about old men and women having to go without food or other necessities in order to afford their medicine.

Nah, that's not a crisis at all. What the hell was I thinking?

"New orleans - I don't see it as anything approaching a crisis. I see it as yet another failure by the federal government."

Again, perhaps it's lack of empathy on your part, but for those of us who live in the Gulf Coast (so we then, according to conservative argument, ask for the disasters we receive), another major hurricane is as inevitable as April 15 of every year. The levee system, as it stands now, might as well be made of cardboard and superglue; it cannot stand up to a category 2 hurricane, much less the monsters like Katrina. People have moved back to New Orleans to begin rebuilding their lives, trusting that the federal government is going to appropriate the money needed to improve the levees so that another Katrina doesn't happen again. Instead, all of that money is being siphoned away to another country we're intent on destroying, then re-building. If, indeed, we are subjected to another of mother nature's most devastating storms, the faith of New Orleanians will be destroyed, and that city will cease to exist.

Nah, that's not a crisis at all.

"Minimum wage - What is in crisis about this? Minimum wage is an insult to people who accept it. The crisis is the failure of society to expect people to do for themselves."

What's that you would preach to me from time to time about working your way up? Doesn't that, by default, require one to start from the bottom, i.e., minimum wage? When the government sets this wage well below what one can successfully live off of, the crisis ensues, albeit for people other than yourself. (An "insult to the people who accept it"? Some of the most necessary jobs in this country pay only minimum wage--would you get the executives to do them?)

"Violent crime - has never been a federal issue, and there is no federal solution. The "rise" in violent crime isn't such s story. FBI index crimes rose, but actually at a rate that would be expected compared to the increase in population."

You know what? Snooping in on my private mail, telephone conversations, and library habits aren't federal problems either, but gosh darnit, they've taken it upon themselves to get involved anyway. I'd be willing to bet a lot of money I don't have that, were that violence to escalate to such a level that anarchy would soon ensue, the federal government would quickly make that its problem.

"Terrorist disaster - In case you haven't noticed, we havent had either a terrorist or natural disaster to respond to lately. Besides, there is no terrorist theat. We should send them flowers and puppies to appease them."

Katrina was a little more than a year ago, and the federal government proved its complete, utter ineptitude during its first big test since 9/11. (I suppose, though, that the relative calm of hurricane season 2006 was due, in large part, to Dubya's efforts on the front lines.) People in our own country were left to starve, drown, or die in some other unimaginable way while money and resources were, again, funneled overseas, where there WAS no terrorist threat until we invaded and set up permanent camp. Before the invasion, there most certainly was a terrorist threat from the al Qaeda our fearless (although never present in battle) commander-in-chief dismissed with the flick of his hand, and now that threat has grown due to our horrible actions post-9/11. We have monumentally pissed off a large majority of the rest of the world, and our hubris will not be without its consequences.

Crises? WHAT crises?!

Robert said...

So there was no criminal intent on the part of the muslim world until after 9/11? I think someone needs to go back to the timeline that started in about 1979...

The rest of the stuff is not a crisis list. It is a lsit of things that shows how people want to whine about something and have someone else pay for their situation.

I worked for minimum wage, for about 3 years while a kid. I never settled for it in the long run. I have been withou insurance. I now pay incredible premiums every month to make sure my family is covered. It ind of goes hand in hand with educating myself and working hard.

I live just a couple of hours from the Gulf, and love to spend time there. I would never buy a home on the Gulf. If people choose to return to New Orleans, then they should accept the risk and not expect someone else to rescue them next time. I feel the same about people who accept government handouts and then rebuild their homes on the Florida coast.

Once again, the local and state governments in NO failed to evacuate people. Yes, the fed screwed up too, but maybe the people in NO should put some thought into their choice of public officials. "Chocolate City" Nagin is a joke.

Hmmmm. 1979. Isn't that the year the U.S. armed the Afghan mujahadeen against the Soviet Union invaders because it was in our best interest at the time? America was Osama's best bud in 1979, Robert. Perhaps your history books omitted this extremely important event.

"The rest of the stuff is not a crisis list. It is a lsit of things that shows how people want to whine about something and have someone else pay for their situation."

Saying that something white is black does not make it black. I think several million Americans who have struggled in vain to afford housing, food, and health insurance would argue with you, but again, you would simply tell them it's all their fault, that they shouldn't have chosen to be poor in the first place.

"If people choose to return to New Orleans, then they should accept the risk and not expect someone else to rescue them next time."

Perhaps they shouldn't believe, then, the president's claim that his job is "to protect" the American people. Or is that only when Muslims are involved?

Robert said...

No, my history books are well versed in the arming of Afghanis to combat the Soviet Union. I am not sure what our point is about that.

Thats a silly stateent, that I would tell them not to be poor in the first place. The problem with liberals is that you see individual suffering, and try to fix the individual suffering. I prefer to fix the problem, not make myself feel as if I am such a great person for caring.

The great experiment has failed. Can you not see that? If it were working, then poverty would be elminated, not simply shifted from one person to another. Governments should spend their time and monies to support self development and individual achievement.

National policy should be directed toward an objective, not annual feel good spending.

Obob, I agree completely. Pelosi has already shown her catty, high school girl side in the Jane Harman nonsense, and I have a feeling it's indicative of what's to come from her.

Robert, Notre Dame got what we LSU fans affectionately refer to as a good ol' smackdown. True, the game would have been much more interesting had Notre Dame scored a couple of times, but then, where's the fun in that?
