Amnesty for Insurgents? Remember Zarqawis death?

After the death of Abu al-Zarqawi, and the information that was released concerning the informants that gave him up, I posited that there was a political deal in the making that gave up Zarqawi. I also positid that the Sunni would have to see that a real government constructed with their involvement, is the only viable option for them. It is also the only viable option for the Shia.

This offer of amnesty for those not directly responsible for terror attacks was quickly praised by the Sunni leadership. As in the U.S., there are fringe elements on both sides who won't like anything that happens, but this may be part of a growing "culture of cooperation" between the competing religious denominations in Iraq.

If so, there will be more good things down the road. Continue watching to items that have appeal to both sides. Even more importantly, watch how fast these items are agreed to, as that is a good indicator of cooperation.
